Artist's Statement Photography provides me with a balance between reason and emotion. Figuring out how to blur the line between the two is one of my goals. Black & white images satisfy a sense of order, but include a mystery that creates the balance I seek. They are wonderful for exploring shapes, contrasts, form and composition. I especially enjoy working with digital infrared because it captures a range of light unseen to the human eye, making every photo a revelation. Color photographs please me simply because color is itself beautiful and often so full of joy.

A native Oregonian, Martha Warrington grew up with a deep appreciation of Oregon's often rugged and lonely outdoor spaces. Her family thrived on outdoor activities including whitewater boating, endurance hiking, and camping trips to remote areas. Following a year as a Rotary exchange student in The Netherlands, she attended Stanford University and Principia College. She completed her M.A. Degree at the University of Portland. A music major, she also studied art, philosophy and history.

After graduating from college, Martha became a member of the North Carolina Symphony and soon moved to a position with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. After moving to Toronto, Canada, she was a member of the Cecelia String Quartet, which at that time was Canada's only all-female professional string quartet. She was also a member of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Returning to Portland to be near her family, Martha played in the Portland Opera Orchestra and as Principal Violist of the West Coast Chamber Orchestra before joining the Oregon Symphony in 1984. When she is not playing the viola, Martha is usually busy on her computer designing and building websites, and owns a web development company, Digital PDX. She began devoting time to photography, originally in response to requests from her web clients. This quickly developed into a serious interest in photography, and now she spends many of her free days and vacations traveling and photographing landscapes. Botanical images are another of her favorite photography subjects.

Martha also enjoys reading, gardening, traveling, and playing the violin for fun.
